Osteoporosis Concerns Lead to Osteoporosis Testing in NJ

Prevent Fractures and Identify Causes of Osteoporosis in New Jersey

Osteoporosis TestingDo you have a small frame? Are you female and over the age of 45? Do you smoke or have you smoked in the past? Are you drinking alcohol and/or caffeinated beverages? Do you take steroids, thyroid medication, anti-convulsion medication or hormones? If you have answered, “yes” to any of these questions, then you may at a higher risk for osteoporosis and should have an osteoporosis screening.

Osteoporosis is a chronic, progressive condition - stealing bone from the body! Bones become fragile and are more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks.

Yes, osteoporosis can be a silent disease, but some patients suffer symptoms such as a gradual loss of height along with stooped posture, backache or fractures of the spine, wrist or hip. A trip to the dentist (dental x-rays) may reveal a loss of bone in the jaw, which can be a sign of osteoporosis.

Disturbingly, one in two women and one in eight men will suffer from an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. It is estimated that 20 million American women suffer from osteoporosis, and 80 percent of them don't even know it! It is especially important to be tested if you are Caucasian or Asian, have a family history of osteoporosis, had a hysterectomy or early natural menopause, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism (low testosterone in males) or a diet low in calcium or magnesium. Other risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol, smoking, or are a high endurance athlete (runner). Therefore, it is vital to know if you have osteoporosis - before your bones break!

Attention men… in the past few years the problem of osteoporosis in men has been recognized as an important public health issue. Men in their fifties do not experience the rapid loss of bone mass that women do in the years following menopause, but by around age 65, men are losing bone mass at the same rate as women, and the absorption of calcium (essential nutrient for bone health) throughout life, decreases in both sexes.

At the AIMS Clinic of East Brunswick, NJ we offer osteoporosis screening and specialized osteoporosis testing with the DTX4000. The DTX4000 is a dual energy x-ray densitometer (detects changes in bone density), quickly performing measurements of the distal forearm. This test allows the patient to be fully clothed and comfortable - taking as little as 5 minutes to conduct. The best way to avoid the onset of osteoporosis is to receive an osteoporosis assessment earlier, rather than later at the AIMS Clinic. If you’ve had osteoporosis testing and are interested in osteoporosis treatments, our Team of Doctors and Therapists can help you.
