Fibromyalgia Facts

Fibromyalgia has a multitude of symptoms with almost as many myths! Many people want to know if it is a real disease or is it all in your head? One reason for confusion is that Fibromyalgia can not be identified through diagnostic tests (blood work, MRIs, CT scans and X-rays). In addition, it can strike with a swarm of co-existing conditions (chronic fatigue syndrome, depression and lupus) and involves pain in many parts of the body. As a result, many people with Fibromyalgia struggle to find both answers and relief. We’ve created a Fibromyalgia Treatment Program, which has helped hundreds of patients reclaim their lives.

Below are some of our Tips:

Chiropractic: Structural balance impacts the nervous system. It is facilitated through chiropractic adjustments or manipulations. To restore spinal balance safely and comfortably to those patients in extreme pain, we offer low-force activator adjustments (uses a small tool which delivers a light and a pain-free measured force to correct misalignments) and the non-force (SOT) Sacro-Occipital Technique (padded blocks are placed under the patient in the pelvic area, which allow the body to adjust itself).

Physical Therapy: Therapy may include massage, heat or cold therapies, hydrotherapy, electric muscle stimulation (reduces muscle spasms and releases endorphins – the body’s natural pain killers) and ultrasound (helps reduce muscle spasms, inflammation, stiffness and pain). As pain is reduced and function improves, active physical therapy will be incorporated to address core stability, flexibility, strength and joint movement. It may include Core Stability (strong core muscles help back muscles support the spine), Muscle Flexibility and Strengthening (to lengthen and strengthen muscles, improve range-of-motion and joint movement). Active physical therapy helps strengthen the body and may prevent further Fibromyalgia pain.

Exercise: Gentle exercise such as yoga, water aerobics and daily walking can be helpful. Our Physical Therapists have created a gradient exercise program to relieve pain, promote healing, improve body mechanics and restore function.

Acupuncture: A study published in the June edition of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings shows acupuncture can relieve pain and anxiety in fibromyalgia patients for up to 7 months after the treatment without pain and side effects.

Diet: Fibromyalgia patients should consume foods with anti-inflammatory properties, to prevent pain caused by inflammation. Limit foods with simple sugars and carbohydrates (fatty meats, and processed and fast foods), avoid food additives (monosodium glutamate and the artificial sweetener aspartame) which can increase pain and avoid common allergens (eggs, wheat and dairy) until a blood test is conducted. Consume lean meats, complex carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Prevent dehydration and drink water!

Herbal Remedies: Herbal alternatives for pain include evening primrose, ginger and white willow bark. Lemon balm may help ease chronic fatigue and stress, while eucalyptus may relax tired muscles.
