Tips from a Headache Specialist for Pain Relief

Effective Migraine Treatment in East Brunswick, NJ

At the AIMS Clinic®, our goal is to provide quick relief for your headache pain, as well as to treat any underlying cause. It seems that every day, headache sufferers are either calling or coming to our Center, desperately searching for a Headache Specialist. Whether their headaches are occasional or frequent, dull or throbbing, with or without unbearable pain and nausea – relief is needed. Some are seeking effecting migraine treatment, while others are seeking treatment for tension, hormonal or sinus headaches.

There are over 200 types of headaches – however, there are three main categories. These include Primary Headaches (Tension, Migraine or Cluster Headaches) – which account for over 90% of all headaches, Secondary Headaches (Sinus Infections, Brain Tumor or Aneurism) – which account for less than 10% of all headaches and lastly, Cranial neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches – which account for a minimal percentage of headaches.

When a new patient comes to our 8,000 square foot Center, an in-depth consultation and evaluation are conducted. It is vital to understand the impact headaches have on the lives of each patient. Many find themselves popping pills, going to a dark room and laying down, clenching their teeth or becoming frustrated and angry. Luckily, there are other safe and effective options!

As a Headache Specialist, with over thirty five years of successfully treating patients, certain headache triggers have been isolated, which seem to be prevalent. These include stress, poor posture, trauma (whiplash or a fall), TMJ misalignment, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, allergies or toxins. In order to create a successful headache pain management program, identifying each patient’s specific triggers are essential.

“Simple solutions” or headache remedies may include a new prescription for glasses or contacts, better lighting when reading, medical treatment for a sinus or ear infection, increasing water to prevent dehydration, nasal irrigation or a new mattress.

For muscle tension headaches or headaches that originate in the neck – due to poor posture, sitting or standing in strained positions or holding the head steady too long; spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments are effective. Gentle, controlled and directed chiropractic adjustments to spinal joints and tissues help to restore and optimize function and movement. Other chiropractic options include Myofascial Release (MFR) – massage techniques to relax and optimize the muscles and the soft tissues between them, as well as Active Release Technique (ART) – targeted pressure and stretching treatments of muscles and other soft tissues to help release scar tissue and restore muscle function. ART helps to ease nerve compression, thus helping to relieve headaches.

Additional tips include:

  1. Practice Proper Posture and Ergonomics: Helps to keep stress to the cervical and upper thoracic spine to a minimum. Remember to keep your computer screen at eye level.
  2. Take a Break: If you find yourself in a fixed position for an extended amount of time… take a break and stretch every 30 – 60 minutes.  Remember to move your head, neck and upper back.
  3. Regular Exercise: Helps keep the body and mind healthy, happy and strong. Try to exercise 3 – 5 times per week and include cardiovascular, flexibility and strength training.
  4. Dietary Changes: Avoid or reduce nitrates – found in certain deli meats, hot dogs and pickled or cured foods; alcohol – which may lead to dehydration and MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) – found in some soy sauce, chicken bouillon and meat tenderizers. Dietary changes are part of a successful migraine treatment program.
